The seven Cuccos and the Empty Bottle
In the daytime, young Link meets the Cucco Lady by the pen near the path to the Graveyard. “My Cuccos have run away!” Bring all seven back to the pen and she gives you an Empty Bottle, one of the four in the game. Pick a Cucco up and carry it; holding one also lets you glide down from high places. Keep hitting a Cucco and a whole flock attacks you.

- By the Cucco Lady, a little toward the Graveyard.
- Near the village entrance from Hyrule Field.
- On the way up to Death Mountain Trail, near the gate.
- Inside a crate by the stairs in the middle of the village. Roll into the crate to break it.
- On the ledge by the House of Skulltula. Glide down to it with another Cucco from the house under construction, or hit it with the Slingshot so it runs off the ledge.
- In the fenced yard by the windmill, near a hole in the ground.
- Up the ladder in the same fenced yard.
Getting into the fenced yard
The last two Cuccos are in a fenced yard next to the windmill. Carry a Cucco up the steps toward the windmill and glide from the end of the path onto the fence, or climb to the top of the watchtower, face the middle of the village, hold L and side-jump left onto the fence (in Master Quest the world is mirrored, so jump right). Throw the Cucco by the hole over the fence, climb the ladder for the last one, then glide back down with it.
Pieces of Heart
- The man on the roof (4). A man sits on a rooftop next to the watchtower. Young Link climbs the watchtower and jumps across; adult Link can use the Hookshot. He says: “Hey! Good to see you up here! I’ll give you this as a memento.”
- The cow’s cage in Impa’s House (6). Through the front door you can see a cow in a cage. The way in is at the back: a small opening on the ledge behind the house. Young Link can glide there with a Cucco from the house under construction; adult Link can use the Hookshot to get onto the roof and drop to the ledge. The Piece of Heart is in the cage. Play Epona’s Song to the cow for milk.
- Inside the windmill (9). The Piece of Heart sits on a ledge high in the windmill. Young Link can grab it with the Boomerang. Adult Link gets there through Dampé’s grave in the Graveyard: finish Dampé’s race and take the Hookshot, then play the Song of Time to clear the blocks at the exit. You come out inside the windmill; jump across the turning platform to the Piece of Heart.
- House of Skulltula (8). Bring 50 Gold Skulltula tokens. The other rewards are listed in the Gold Skulltula article.
The windmill, the Song of Storms and the well
In the windmill a music man turns his phonograph: “I’m a music man who loves to go around and around!” Come back as adult Link, take out your ocarina and he remembers the kid who played a strange song seven years ago. He plays it, and you learn the Song of Storms.
After you clear the Forest Temple and Sheik speaks to you in the Temple of Time, return the Master Sword and go back to young Link. Play the Song of Storms inside the windmill. The windmill speeds up, the water drains, and the well in the middle of the village (10) is dry. Climb down into the Bottom of the Well, home of the Lens of Truth. Playing the song anywhere else in the village only makes it rain, and adult Link cannot enter the well.
Sheik and the Nocturne of Shadow
After the Forest, Fire and Water Temples (all three medallions), walk into Kakariko as adult Link. The village is on fire, and something bursts out of the well. After the scene, Sheik teaches you the Nocturne of Shadow, which warps you to the ledge in front of the Shadow Temple at the back of the Graveyard. To open the temple, stand in the middle of the torches and cast Din’s Fire.
Shops and the Shooting Gallery
When adult Link arrives, the shops from Castle Town have moved to Kakariko. The Bazaar and the Potion Shop are at 12; the Shooting Gallery is in the building that was under construction (7).
- Bazaar (daytime): the Hylian Shield, bombs, arrows, Deku Nuts, Deku Sticks and a Recovery Heart.
- Potion Shop (daytime): Red and Green Potions, Blue Fire for 300 Rupees, bottled fish, bugs, a Poe and a fairy, and Deku Nuts. Blue Fire needs an empty bottle and the Giant’s Wallet; the Ice Cavern has it free.
- Shooting Gallery (daytime): 20 Rupees for 15 shots at 10 targets. With the Fairy Bow, your first perfect score earns a bigger Quiver; later perfect scores pay out Rupees. Hit 8 or 9 for a free retry.
- The old woman’s potion shop is behind the Potion Shop, reached from the back yard. This is where the Odd Mushroom from the Lost Woods becomes the Odd Poultice. After that she also sells Blue Potion for 100 Rupees; bring an empty bottle.
Gold Skulltulas and the House of Skulltula
Five Gold Skulltulas come out at night for young Link: on the guard’s house near the gate to Death Mountain, on the watchtower ladder, on the house under construction, on the House of Skulltula’s wall, and in the tree near the entrance (roll into it). Adult Link gets one at night on the wall above Impa’s House, with the Hookshot. Details are in the Gold Skulltula list.
The House of Skulltula (8) is where you trade tokens for rewards: the Adult’s Wallet at 10, the Shard of Agony at 20, the Giant’s Wallet at 30, Bombchus at 40, a Piece of Heart at 50 and a Huge Rupee at 100.
More in the village
- The gate to Death Mountain (11). As young Link, show the guard Zelda’s Letter to open it. Afterwards he asks for the Keaton Mask, which starts the mask quest.
- Grottos. The open grotto in the fenced yard (14) has a chest with a Red Rupee. Bomb the spot near the House of Skulltula (15) to open a grotto where two ReDeads guard a chest with a Huge Rupee (200 Rupees).
- Adult trade. As adult Link in the daytime, the Cucco Lady gives you the Pocket Egg. Hatch it, wake the sleeping man in the house with the Pocket Cucco, and she trades it for Cojiro.
- The Graveyard (16) is through the arch at the east end. Dampé’s race (adult Link) wins you the Hookshot and leads to the windmill, and the Shadow Temple is at the top.
- Master Quest mirrors the whole world, so swap left and right. The village’s quests and item locations are unchanged.
Kakariko Village FAQ
How do you get the bottle in Kakariko Village?
As young Link in the daytime, talk to the Cucco Lady by the pen and bring back all seven of her Cuccos. Five are easy to find; two are in the fenced yard by the windmill. She gives you an Empty Bottle.
How do you drain the well in Kakariko Village?
Learn the Song of Storms from the music man in the windmill as adult Link. Once the Forest Temple is cleared and Sheik has spoken to you in the Temple of Time, return the Master Sword and, as young Link, play it inside the windmill. The windmill spins wildly and the well dries up, opening the Bottom of the Well.
When does Sheik teach the Nocturne of Shadow?
Once you have the Forest, Fire and Water Medallions, walk into Kakariko as adult Link. The village catches fire and something bursts out of the well. After the attack, Link comes to and Sheik teaches him the Nocturne of Shadow.
How many Pieces of Heart are in Kakariko Village?
Four: the man on the roof, the cow’s cage at the back of Impa’s House, the ledge inside the windmill, and the 50-token reward at the House of Skulltula.
Why are the shops in Kakariko closed?
The Bazaar, the Shooting Gallery and the Potion Shop only sell to adult Link, and all three are open in the daytime only.
Is Bolero of Fire learned in Kakariko Village?
No. The road to Death Mountain starts in Kakariko, but Sheik teaches the Bolero of Fire in Death Mountain Crater. The song you learn in Kakariko as adult Link is the Nocturne of Shadow.
What is different in Master Quest?
In Master Quest on 3DS the whole world is mirrored, so the village’s left and right are swapped. The village’s quests and item locations stay the same apart from the mirroring. The nearby Bottom of the Well and Shadow Temple use their Master Quest layouts.
