How to Evolve Tyrunt in Pokémon X and Y (Level 39, Daytime)

Tyrunt evolves into Tyrantrum at level 39 or higher during the day: 4:00 AM to 7:59 PM on the 3DS clock. No stone, friendship or trade. Here’s why a level 39 Tyrunt didn’t evolve.

In Pokémon X and Y, Tyrunt evolves into Tyrantrum when it levels up at level 39 or higher during the day, between 4:00 AM and 7:59 PM on your 3DS clock. You don’t need a stone, high friendship or a trade. If Tyrunt reached level 39 at night, nothing happens: give it one more level before 8 PM, with a battle or a Rare Candy. An Everstone blocks it, and Pokémon in the Day Care never evolve. Pokémon Y works exactly the same way.

How to evolve Tyrunt in Pokémon X and Y: level 39 or higher, a level-up between 4:00 AM and 7:59 PM on the 3DS clock
Everything that has to be true when Tyrunt gains the level.

This page covers Pokémon X and Pokémon Y on Nintendo 3DS and 2DS, up to the final version 1.5. None of the updates changed how Tyrunt evolves. If you’re playing Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Sword and Shield or Scarlet and Violet, those are different games, and their rules don’t carry over (more on that at the end).

How to evolve Tyrunt in four steps

  1. Check the time on the HOME Menu. It has to be between 4:00 AM and 7:59 PM. Go by the clock, not by the sky in the game.
  2. Take off any Everstone and make sure Tyrunt is in your party, not in the Day Care.
  3. Get Tyrunt to level 39 or higher. If it’s already past 39, it only needs one more level.
  4. Level it up once. Win a battle where Tyrunt gains a level, or give it a Rare Candy. Don’t press B when the evolution starts.

Why your Tyrunt didn’t evolve at level 39

Tyrunt hits level 39, the battle ends, and there’s no evolution scene. The Lucky Egg and the Exp. Share have nothing to do with it. It’s almost always one of these four:

Why Tyrunt won’t evolve at level 39 in Pokémon X and Y: night level-up, Everstone, pressing B, or the Day Care
Each one has a quick fix. None of them stops Tyrunt from evolving later.

It leveled up at night

From 8:00 PM to 3:59 AM it’s night as far as evolution is concerned, and Tyrunt only evolves by day. That’s the night window Amaura uses, so a level-up at 9 PM does nothing for Tyrunt. You haven’t missed your chance. Tyrunt tries again every time it gains a level, so the next level-up between 4:00 AM and 7:59 PM evolves it, whether it’s level 40, 45 or 60.

Look at the clock before the battle that will level it up, not after. With the Exp. Share on, a benched Tyrunt can gain a level in a fight it never joined, and it’s easy to miss that it happened at 8:15 PM.

It’s holding an Everstone

An Everstone stops Tyrunt from evolving. Check Tyrunt’s held item in its summary and take the stone off, then level it up during the day. The Lucky Egg, by contrast, has no effect on evolution: it only adds Exp. Points.

You pressed B during the evolution

Pressing B while the evolution animation plays cancels it. Tyrunt stays a Tyrunt, and it tries again at its next level-up, as long as that’s during the day too.

It leveled up in the Day Care

A Pokémon left at the Route 7 Day Care gains levels as you walk, but it never evolves there, however high it gets. Take Tyrunt back, put it in your party and give it one more level during the day.

It’s level 100

One more case, and the only one you can’t fix: a level 100 Tyrunt can’t level up any more, so it can never evolve.

What “daytime” means in Pokémon X and Y

X and Y read the 3DS system clock, the time shown on the HOME Menu. Tyrunt’s evolution window is 4:00 AM to 7:59 PM (04:00–19:59): a level-up at 39 or higher in that window evolves it. From 8:00 PM to 3:59 AM (20:00–03:59) it doesn’t.

Tyrunt’s evolution window on the 3DS clock. 20:00–03:59 is Amaura’s window instead.

The evolution window, hour by hour

04:00–19:59 (4:00 AM–7:59 PM)Evolves into Tyrantrum
20:00–03:59 (8:00 PM–3:59 AM)Doesn’t evolve

Don’t judge it by the sky. X and Y also split the day into four periods for lighting: morning 04:00–10:59, day 11:00–17:59, evening 18:00–20:59 and night 21:00–03:59. That’s a different boundary from the evolution check. At 20:30, for example, the game is still in its evening period, but Tyrunt won’t evolve.

The 8 PM hour is also when hidden Mega Stones sparkle on the ground, once you’ve seen the Anistar City sundial scene after the Hall of Fame (see the Mega Stone locations). If you’re out collecting them, that’s not the time to evolve Tyrunt. Do the level-up before 8 PM, or wait until 4 AM.

Should you change the 3DS clock?

Evolution follows the 3DS system clock, so level it up during the day. To avoid upsetting time-based events, it’s better to wait for a real daytime than to change the clock. If it’s late, keep a Rare Candy for the next morning.

Level Tyrunt up fast

A revived Tyrunt starts at level 20, so it has 19 levels to go on the Medium Fast Exp. curve, the one most Pokémon use. In Kalos, these speed it up:

  • The Exp. Share is a Key Item from Alexa in Santalune City. Turn it on and Tyrunt earns Exp. Points from every battle, even on the bench.
  • A held Lucky Egg gives 1.5× Exp. Points. It doesn’t stop the evolution.
  • Trainers give more Exp. Points than wild Pokémon of the same level, so battle every Trainer on the routes.
  • A Rare Candy is one instant level. It counts as a level-up, so a Rare Candy at 10 AM evolves a level 39+ Tyrunt on the spot. The Battle Maison trades one for 48 BP.

How to get Tyrunt first

There are no wild Tyrunt in Kalos. You get one from the Jaw Fossil:

  1. Go to Glittering Cave, north of Route 9, and beat the Team Flare Grunts deep inside. The last two are a Multi Battle alongside your neighbour.
  2. Pick the Jaw Fossil when the Fossil Lab scientist offers you Jaw or Sail. You get only one.
  3. Take it to the Fossil Lab in Ambrette Town. It’s revived on the spot as a level 20 Tyrunt.

A revived Tyrunt always has the ability Strong Jaw, which powers up biting moves like Bite, Crunch and the Fang moves. Its Hidden Ability, Sturdy, can’t come from the Fossil Lab. It’s male 87.5% of the time. For the whole cave route, the Rock Smash fossils and Old Amber, see Pokémon X fossils.

No friendship, stone or trade

Tyrunt’s only conditions are the level and the time of day. These don’t matter at all:

  • Friendship: Tyrunt has friendship like every Pokémon, but its evolution never checks it. That’s different from Espeon, which needs both daytime and 220 friendship, or Umbreon, which needs night and 220 friendship.
  • Pokémon-Amie hearts don’t affect Tyrunt’s evolution either.
  • Evolution stones: no stone from the Stone Emporium works on Tyrunt.
  • Trading: a traded Tyrunt evolves the same way. Trading only gives it extra Exp. Points.

There’s also no such thing as a Fossil type. Tyrunt and Tyrantrum are both Rock and Dragon.

Amaura is the night fossil

The Sail Fossil you didn’t pick becomes Amaura, and it’s Tyrunt’s mirror image: level 39 or higher, but at night, from 8:00 PM to 3:59 AM. It evolves into Aurorus. If you have two saves, or a traded Amaura, it’s easy to mix the two up.

One save gets one of the two from the story. For the other, trade with a second save or a friend over local wireless. Global Trade and Wonder Trade ended with Nintendo Network in April 2024, but local trades still work. You’ll also meet both lines in battle: Grant, the Cyllage City Gym Leader, uses a level 25 Tyrunt and Amaura, and Champion Diantha has a level 65 Tyrantrum.

Should you wait to evolve Tyrunt?

Not really. Both Pokémon learn the same moves by level up to Dragon Claw at level 37. After that, Tyrunt learns its last three moves a little earlier, and Tyrantrum adds three of its own:

Head Smash—58
Rock Slide—68
Giga Impact—75

Evolving at 39 costs you two levels on Thrash and three on Earthquake. Tyrantrum’s base stats total 521 against Tyrunt’s 362, so for almost every team it’s better to evolve right away.

Head Smash isn’t taught when Tyrunt evolves. Tyrantrum learns it at level 58, but it’s also one of Tyrantrum’s level 1 moves, so Madam Reminder in Dendemille Town can teach it right after evolution for one Heart Scale. She can also teach Thrash or Earthquake later if you skipped them.

Pokémon Y, later games and Legends: Z-A

  • Pokémon Y is identical: same Jaw Fossil choice, same level 39, same daytime hours.
  • Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have no Tyrunt of their own, but one you bring over evolves the same way.
  • Later games keep level 39 by day, but their day hours differ from X and Y, so check that game’s own clock.
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a separate game set in Lumiose City. Its evolution rules don’t apply to X and Y.

Tyrantrum’s base stats are 82 HP, 121 Attack, 119 Defense, 69 Sp. Atk, 59 Sp. Def and 71 Speed. Its ability is Strong Jaw, or Rock Head as a Hidden Ability, and it has no Mega Evolution. Find Tyrunt and Tyrantrum as #064 and #065 in the Coastal section of the Kalos Pokédex, and Ambrette Town, Route 9 and Glittering Cave on the interactive Kalos map.

Using Tyrantrum after it evolves

Tyrantrum is a physical attacker with high Attack and Defense and middling Speed. Rock and Dragon together leave it weak to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Ice, Dragon and Fairy moves. It shrugs off Fire, which does only a quarter damage, and resists Normal, Flying, Poison and Electric.

Strong Jaw makes biting moves 1.5× stronger, so Crunch, which both Tyrunt and Tyrantrum learn at level 34, hits hard right away. The Fang moves are even better partners for it, but they only come as Egg Moves. Tyrunt can be bred with Fire Fang, Ice Fang, Thunder Fang, Poison Fang, Dragon Dance, Rock Polish and Curse from the right father at the Day Care. Babies from Tyrunt or Tyrantrum hatch as Tyrunt at level 1 and evolve under the same rules: level 39, by day.

FAQ

What level does Tyrunt evolve in Pokémon X and Y?

Level 39 or higher, and only when it levels up during the day.

Why didn’t my Tyrunt evolve at level 39?

Most likely it leveled up between 8:00 PM and 3:59 AM. Otherwise it’s holding an Everstone, you pressed B, or it was in the Day Care. Give it one more level during the day.

What time is daytime for Tyrunt in X and Y?

From 4:00 AM to 7:59 PM on the 3DS clock. The 4 AM hour already counts, and from 8:00 PM it’s too late. Go by the clock, not the sky.

Does Tyrunt need friendship to evolve?

No. Only the level and the time of day matter.

Can I use a Rare Candy?

Yes. A Rare Candy during the day evolves a Tyrunt that’s level 38 or higher, because the candy takes it to 39 or beyond.

Does the Day Care evolve Tyrunt?

No. Pokémon don’t evolve in the Day Care. Take it out and level it up once in your party.

How do I evolve Amaura?

The same way, at level 39 or higher, but at night: 8:00 PM to 3:59 AM.

Is it different in Pokémon Y?

No. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y use the same fossil, level and hours.
