Miracle Mask Puzzle 086: Even Deal Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 086, Even Deal? It's a hidden puzzle at a card table inside the Casino in Monte d'Or: turn as few cards as you can so you and the dealer end up with the same score. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Arrange, 30 picarats, Chapter 5.

Puzzle 086 is Even Deal (Even Ten in the UK version), a 30-picarat Arrange puzzle hidden inside the Casino in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 5. Nobody hands it to you: zoom in on the card tables and tap the green-haired dealer behind the table on the right. You don't have to solve it to finish the story. Ten number cards lie on the table between you and the dealer. The dealer can read numbers worth 45 in total from that side of the table, and you can read only 31 from yours. Your job is to turn as few cards as possible so that both of you have the same score.

Video: Even Deal solved. It shows the answer, so skip it if you only want the hints.

This page covers story Puzzle 086 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The cards and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 086, the other puzzles in the Casino, or Puzzle 86 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 086? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 086 Even Deal: on the top screen, a green card table on a tiled floor seen from above, with a green-haired dealer leaning over the far side, a white sleeve and hand at the near side, and ten cream cards in two rows of five; on the touch screen, the same ten cards larger on green felt, reading 0, 6, 8, L, 9 in the top row and 5, h, E, 2, 1 in the bottom row

The puzzle reads: "A dealer at the casino places 10 cards on the table in front of you and says, "The total value of all the numbers I can read from here is 45. The total of the numbers you can read from there is 31. I win!" Can you rotate as few cards as possible so that you and the dealer both have the same score?" The objective bar says "Make the scores the same!"

The top screen shows the table from above, with the dealer leaning over the far side and your own sleeve at the near side. The touch screen shows the ten cards in two rows of five, the way you see them. Tap a card to turn it half a turn, so it's upside down; tap it again to turn it back. Nothing else changes, and the cards never swap places. When you're happy with the cards, submit.

From your side, the top row reads 0, 6, 8, L, 9 and the bottom row reads 5, h, E, 2, 1, so three of the cards don't show a number you can read. The dealer sits on the other side of the table, so every card the dealer looks at is upside down compared with how you see it.

The UK version calls the puzzle Even Ten. Its text writes "ten cards" where the North American text says "10 cards", and it leaves out the comma before "and" in the lists of numbers; otherwise the wording matches. The cards and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.

Wrong Puzzle 086?

  • Daily Puzzle 086 is Ducks 02, from the Little Lost Ducklings set.
  • Puzzle 085, Slot Sequence, is the puzzle before this one, in the same Casino. It comes from Drake, the casino owner. If yours starts with him, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 084, Neon Orange, is the hidden puzzle on the scorpion neon sign outside, at the Casino Entrance.
  • Puzzle 087, Merry-Go-Tiles, is the next puzzle number, at the Carousel.
  • Puzzle 86 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show ten number cards between you and a dealer, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

In Chapter 5, your objective becomes "Go to the Scorpion Casino!" Once you're inside the Casino, the puzzle is waiting in the zoomed view of the card tables. In the normal view, tap the spot just above the red slot machine in the middle of the room to zoom in. Then tap the green-haired dealer standing behind the card table on the right. You can see the dealer from the normal view too, but the puzzle only starts from the zoomed view.

When you tap the dealer, Emmy says, "Oooh, how glamorous!" Luke adds, "All the lights make everything look so exciting!" Emmy warns him, "Careful, Luke. These places are built to make people lose their heads as well as their money." After Luke's "Wh-what? But it looks like fun," Layton suggests, "Rather than gambling, why not see if you can work out this card game here?" Then the puzzle starts.

You don't have to solve it: it's a hidden puzzle, and the story doesn't need it. The dealer keeps offering the puzzle until you solve it, so you can come back for it later.

Inside the Casino: a golden hall with red-curtained balconies, a chandelier hanging from the ceiling and a red-carpeted staircase on the right; a tall wooden roulette cabinet stands at the far left, slot machines and tall stools stand on a red carpet, people stand around the card tables, and a green-haired dealer stands behind a table in the middle; a gold ring labelled Zoom spot circles the area just above the red slot machine in the middle, and two numbered coin rings mark the lower part of the roulette cabinet and the floor under the dark blue slot machine on the right
Illustration of the Casino in the normal view. The gold ring marks the zoom spot, and the numbered rings mark the two hint coins in this view.
The card tables up close: a tall wooden roulette cabinet on the left with an old woman, a man in a suit and a young woman in a blue dress beside it, a red slot machine and a pale grey slot machine in the middle, and on the right a green-haired dealer in a purple waistcoat and red bow tie standing behind a card table; a gold ring labelled Card dealer, Puzzle 086 circles the dealer, coin ring 3 marks the floor at the foot of the pale slot machine's stand, beside a red chair, and coin ring 4 marks the bottom of the chandelier at the top
Illustration of the card tables up close. The gold ring marks the dealer who starts the puzzle, and rings 3 and 4 mark the two hint coins that only show up in the zoomed view.

The Casino has four hint coins. Two are in the normal view: on the lower part of the roulette cabinet at the far left, and on the floor under the dark blue slot machine on the right. The other two only show up after you tap the zoom spot above the red slot machine: on the chandelier hanging from the ceiling, and on the floor by the red chair behind the pale slot machine's stand. Each coin can be collected only once. Four coins pay for the first three hints and leave one over, but the Super Hint costs two, so you'd need a coin you've saved from elsewhere to open every hint.

When the scores won't match

  • Your own total doesn't come to 31. Count only the cards that show a number you can read from your side. Three cards don't.
  • You can't see where the dealer's 45 comes from. Turn the picture upside down in your head: the dealer reads every card from the other side of the table.
  • A card turned and nothing seemed to change. Some numbers look the same either way up. Tap the card again to turn it back.
  • The scores match but the answer is still wrong. The puzzle asks you to turn as few cards as possible, so check whether fewer turns would do it. Every card you leave turned when you submit counts.
  • You can't find the puzzle. It's in the Casino, from Chapter 5: tap the zoom spot above the red slot machine in the middle of the room, then tap the dealer behind the table on the right.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: where to start

You can start by eliminating any cards with values that don't change when rotated. There are a few of those.

Hint 2: which cards matter

The cards whose values don't change when they're rotated are 1, 2, 5, 8, and 0.

You should be focusing on the remaining cards: 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9.

Hint 3: how many to turn

You only need to rotate one card.

Which could it be?

Super Hint: the target score

The dealer's current total score is 45. Yours is 31. The number in the middle of those scores is 38. Is there a card you can rotate to make both your scores equal 38?

What do you need to add to 31 to get 38?

Answer and full solution

The answer below names the card to turn, shows what every card is worth from each side of the table, and shows the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: turn only one card, the 7. It's the fourth card in the top row, the one that looks like an L from your side. Turned the right way up for you, it reads 7. Leave the other nine cards as they are, then submit.

The L is a 7 seen upside down, the h is a 4 and the E is a 3. Those three cards count for the dealer but not for you. The 6 and the 9 count for both of you, but each of you reads a different number.

What each card is worth at the start
Card (as you see it)Your scoreDealer's score
Top row, 1st: 000
Top row, 2nd: 669
Top row, 3rd: 888
Top row, 4th: L (an upside-down 7)07
Top row, 5th: 996
Bottom row, 1st: 555
Bottom row, 2nd: h (an upside-down 4)04
Bottom row, 3rd: E (an upside-down 3)03
Bottom row, 4th: 222
Bottom row, 5th: 111
Total3145

Why it works. The two totals are 14 apart, so the fair score is halfway, 38. Turning a card moves its value from one side of the table to the other. Turn the 7, and you gain 7 points while the dealer loses 7: 31 + 7 = 38 and 45 − 7 = 38. No other single card does it. Turning the 4 or the 3 only shifts 4 or 3 points, turning the 6 or the 9 swaps a 6 for a 9 and shifts just 3 points each way, and the 0, 1, 2, 5 and 8 read the same either way up.

The game confirms it with "That's right!" and then explains: "1, 2, 5, 8, and 0 are worth the same either way. Out of the remaining cards, which are 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9, you just need to rotate the 7 to give yourself seven more points and take seven away from the dealer, making it a draw."

The finished puzzle: on the top screen, the card table from above with the top row now reading 0, 6, 8, 7, 9, and a speech bubble saying 38 beside both the dealer at the far side and the player at the near side; on the touch screen, the ten cards with the fourth card in the top row turned so it reads 7
Illustration of the finished puzzle: the 7 is the right way up for you, and both scores are 38.

If it still doesn't work out:

  • You turned the h and the E. That evens the scores too, at 38 each, but it takes two cards. The puzzle wants as few as possible, and one card is enough.
  • You turned a card that looks the same either way up. It doesn't change the scores, but it still counts as a turned card. Turn it back so only the 7 is turned.
  • You turned the 6 or the 9. That only moves 3 points each way. Turn it back and turn the L instead.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Even Deal shows 30 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 30, 25 or 20 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. If you quit, Luke says, "Hmm. I can't work this one out at all." When you come back to try again, he says, "Give me another chance!" A wrong answer brings "Too bad." and then "There's no need for any tricky calculations here."

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The Casino's four coins, two in the normal view and two in the zoomed view, cover Hints 1 to 3 with one coin left over, so you'll need a coin saved from earlier for the Super Hint, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. Solving it doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You turn the cards by tapping them with the stylus on the touch screen, and the top screen shows the table from above.
  • US and UK English versions: the cards, the scores and the answer are the same. The UK version calls the puzzle Even Ten, and its text differs only in small details of wording and punctuation.

The scene around the puzzle

Luke is the one at the table. When the puzzle is solved, Layton asks, "How was that? Did it quench your curiosity?" and Luke answers, "Yes, thank you! That was fun!"
