Miracle Mask Puzzle 018: That's Juicy! Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 018, That's Juicy!? Find the bottle in the Layton family's Living Room, then open the hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Write Answer, 30 picarats, Chapter 2.

Puzzle 018 is That's Juicy!, a 30-picarat Write Answer puzzle hidden in the Layton family's Living Room during the Chapter 2 flashback. To find it, zoom in on the bookcase and tap the bottle on the kitchen counter behind it. A juice factory sends three customers 18 liters each, packed in different mixes of large, medium and small bottles, and you work out how many liters each size holds. The hints below open one at a time, and the answer stays hidden until you choose to show it.

Video: That's Juicy! solved. It shows the answer, so skip it if you only want the hints.

This page covers story Puzzle 018 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, using the North American text, with pictures rebuilt from the game's own art. The puzzle and its answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; the UK text spells the unit "litres". If you're after Daily Puzzle 018 or Puzzle 18 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 018? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 018 That's Juicy! rebuilt from the game's art: three houses labeled A, B and C, each with a different mix of large, medium and small purple juice bottles and a customer's face, above the touch display with three writing panels showing the outline of a large, a medium and a small bottle, each with an empty box above it

The puzzle's text sets it up: the owner of a juice factory wanted to send a gift to three important customers, and "to make sure no one was offended, they were all given 18 liters of juice". There weren't enough bottles of each size to make the shipments identical, so each customer got a different mix of small, medium and large bottles. You have to work out how many liters each size holds, and the puzzle adds that "all the sizes are whole numbers".

The top screen shows the three shipments, one per house:

The three shipments on the top screen
HouseLargeMediumSmallTotal juice
A (red roof)13318 liters
B (orange roof)20618 liters
C (blue roof)04618 liters

On the touch screen there are three writing panels, each with a faint bottle outline: the large bottle on the left, the medium one in the middle and the small one on the right. You write one number with the stylus in each panel, and it appears in the small box above that panel. When all three boxes are filled, touch Submit; the game checks the three numbers together, in order from left to right.

That's Juicy! in other versions

The puzzle is called That's Juicy! in both the North American and UK English versions. The UK text writes "litres" instead of "liters"; otherwise the wording is nearly the same. The official Japanese title is グレープジュース (Gurēpu Jūsu, "Grape Juice"). The North American version carries a different Japanese label for it, ワインのボトル.

Wrong Puzzle 018?

  • Daily Puzzle 018 in Miracle Mask is a separate puzzle: Kingdom 02, from the Kingdoms set. It has nothing to do with juice bottles.
  • Puzzle 18 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours has no houses full of juice bottles, you're in the wrong game.
  • Puzzles 023 Fairway Fibber and 024 Patterned Apron are also in the Layton family's Living Room, but they're given to you by people in the house, not hidden on the counter.

Where you get it

The Layton family's Living Room rebuilt from the game's art, with a green striped sofa, a floor lamp, a bookcase with a tall clock on top, a dining table under two arched windows and a brick fireplace; markers show hint coins on the sofa cushion, the floor lamp and the fireplace, and the zoom spot on the bookcase
Illustration of the Living Room, rebuilt from the game's art: three hint coins in the normal view, and the bookcase you tap to zoom in.

Puzzle 018 is in Chapter 2, the flashback to the Professor's teenage years in Stansbury, when young Hershel is at home. In the Layton family's Living Room, tap the bookcase to zoom in on the kitchen behind it. On the counter, next to a bowl of fruit, stands a bottle. Tap it.

The kitchen counter behind the bookcase, rebuilt from the game's art: a dark blue bottle, a glass and a bowl of yellow fruit on the counter, two tall stools, a stove with pots, and bottles in a basket on the floor; markers show the puzzle bottle and hint coins on a stool and by the bottles on the floor
Illustration of the zoomed-in view, rebuilt from the game's art: the bottle that starts the puzzle, and two of the three coins that only show up here.

Hershel picks it up with a cheerful "A glass of fruit juice in the morning is a perfect way to start the day!" and then, "Hm. What does this bottle say?" The puzzle starts from there. If you quit, he says "I'll just leave it here for later.", and when you come back he says "I haven't solved the puzzle yet..." before you try again.

Left the house without it?

The Layton family home only appears during the flashbacks. The Living Room may come back in a later flashback chapter, so you may get another chance there. If you still haven't solved it, the puzzle should turn up with Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version), who keeps the puzzles you missed, at the start of Chapter 5. That's probably around the point when your objective becomes "Continue the Investigation!" Missing it doesn't block the story.

Hints, one at a time

These follow the game's own hints, in the same order, with a little more explanation. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: Compare B and C

B and C both received six small bottles. Take those away from both shipments and what's left must still hold the same amount of juice: B's two large bottles against C's four medium ones. So one large bottle holds as much as two medium bottles.

Hint 2: Swap the large bottle in A

Use Hint 1 on A's shipment: swap its one large bottle for two medium ones. A now has five medium bottles and three small ones, while C has four medium and six small. Both are 18 liters, so take four medium and three small away from each: the one extra medium bottle in A matches the three extra small bottles in C. One medium bottle holds as much as three small ones.

Hint 3: Turn everything into small bottles

Go one step further with A. After Hint 2 it holds five medium bottles and three small ones; swap each medium bottle for three small ones. Now A is nothing but small bottles, and you can count them. Since the whole shipment is 18 liters, that tells you how much one small bottle holds.

Super Hint: Put it all together

You now know three things: one large bottle equals two medium bottles, one medium bottle equals three small bottles, and one small bottle holds one liter. Work up from the small bottle to the medium one, then from the medium to the large. Write the large bottle's size in the left panel, the medium in the middle and the small on the right.

Answer and full solution

The answer below covers every step, with pictures of the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer is 6, 3 and 1. The large bottle holds 6 liters, the medium bottle 3 liters and the small bottle 1 liter. Write 6 in the left panel (large), 3 in the middle panel (medium) and 1 in the right panel (small), then touch Submit. The game checks the three boxes together as 6, 3, 1 from left to right.

The three houses with their shipments written as sums: A is 1 large plus 3 medium plus 3 small, B is 2 large plus 6 small, C is 4 medium plus 6 small, each equal to 18, followed by three steps: 1 large equals 2 medium, 1 medium equals 3 small, and small 1 liter, medium 3 liters, large 6 liters
Illustration of the three swaps that solve it, using the shipments from the game's art.

Step by step:

  1. Compare B and C. B is 2 large + 6 small and C is 4 medium + 6 small. Both hold 18 liters and both have six small bottles, so 2 large = 4 medium, which means 1 large = 2 medium.
  2. Swap A's large bottle. A is 1 large + 3 medium + 3 small. Swapping the large bottle for 2 medium makes it 5 medium + 3 small.
  3. Compare A and C. A is now 5 medium + 3 small and C is 4 medium + 6 small, both 18 liters. Taking 4 medium + 3 small from each leaves 1 medium = 3 small.
  4. Turn A into small bottles. Five medium bottles are 15 small ones, plus the three A already had: 18 small bottles holding 18 liters. So a small bottle holds 1 liter.
  5. Work back up. A medium bottle is 3 small = 3 liters, and a large bottle is 2 medium = 6 liters.
  6. Check all three shipments. A: 6 + 9 + 3 = 18. B: 12 + 6 = 18. C: 12 + 6 = 18. Every house gets 18 liters.
  7. Write 6, 3 and 1 in the left, middle and right panels and touch Submit.
The solved puzzle rebuilt from the game's art: each house now shows a single bottle with its size, the large bottle equal to 6, the medium to 3 and the small to 1, and on the touch display the boxes above the large, medium and small panels read 6, 3 and 1
Illustration of the solved puzzle, rebuilt from the game's art: one bottle of each size with its value, and 6, 3 and 1 in the answer boxes.

When you get it right, the game says "The large bottle holds six liters, the medium holds three, and the small holds one. That's a lot of juice!" Afterwards Hershel muses, "I can't decide which juice is my favorite."

If your answer keeps failing:

  • You wrote 1, 3, 6. The panels run large, medium, small from left to right, so the biggest number goes on the left.
  • You only got the small bottle right. Remember that the sizes build on each other: a medium bottle is three small ones, and a large bottle is two medium ones, not three.
  • Your numbers don't add up to 18 for every house. The game's wrong-answer message says it too: "Each combination of bottles adds up to 18 liters. Bear that in mind." Check A, B and C one by one.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

That's Juicy! starts at 30 picarats, and the puzzle can award 30, 25 or 20 picarats. Wrong answers can drop it to 25 and then 20, though how many misses it takes to drop a step isn't clear. Hints don't cost picarats; they cost hint coins. Hints 1 to 3 cost one coin each and the Super Hint costs two, so opening all four costs five coins.

The Living Room has six hint coins of its own, enough to open every hint for this puzzle. Three are in the normal view of the room: in the cushion on the sofa, in the floor lamp and in the fireplace. The other three only show up after you tap the bookcase to zoom in on the kitchen. They're probably at a chair, a basket of bottles and a clock, or at the shorter stool by the counter, the floor next to the taller stool, and a table with a lamp and red books. If one is hard to find, tap around those spots.

Versions and systems

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The answer is written with the stylus on the touch screen; there are no motion controls.
  • US and UK English versions: the picture and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions. The puzzle keeps the name That's Juicy!, and the UK text uses "litres".

At home in Stansbury (story spoiler)

Spoiler warning: this section covers the Chapter 2 scenes around the puzzle. In the flashback to his teenage years, young Hershel heads home to the Layton family house, where his mother is worried about his father, and Hershel decides to go out and look for him. The bottle on the kitchen counter is a puzzle you find while you look around the Living Room; it doesn't appear to give any reward beyond the picarats. Two more puzzles come up in the same room in Chapter 2, Puzzle 023 Fairway Fibber and Puzzle 024 Patterned Apron, and Puzzle 022 Poke 'Em Totems is hidden in Hershel's Room.
