Miracle Mask Puzzle 069: Toppings Up! 2 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 069, Toppings Up! 2? Artie's clumsy chef has flipped half a pizza upside down, and every slice you turn takes its neighbors with it. Open the game's four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Flip, 35 picarats, Montsarton Gallery, Chapter 5.

Puzzle 069 is Toppings Up! 2, a 35-picarat Flip puzzle from Artie, the director of Montsarton Gallery, in Chapter 5. In the UK English version he's called Beaufort, and the puzzle is called Toppings Up! Part 2. The clumsy chef from Puzzle 046 is back: this time exactly half of the pizza is upside down, and every time you flip a slice, the slices on both sides of it flip too. Your job is to get every slice face up. The puzzle is optional.

Video: Toppings Up! 2 solved. It shows the answer, so skip it if you only want the hints.

This page covers story Puzzle 069 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS. The pizza and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; only the name and the wording of the UK text differ a little. Quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 069, one of the other pizza puzzles or Puzzle 69 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 069? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 069 Toppings Up! 2: on the top screen, a pizza cut into eight slices on a round yellow board on a green checked tablecloth, with the four slices on the right face down showing the plain base and the four slices on the left face up with tomato slices, and a spatula under the slice from 6 to 7:30; on the touch screen, the objective bar Flip the pizza face up!, a brown pizza wheel with a handle on an orange background and the Hints, Quit, Memo and Restart buttons

The question reads: "Another pizza gone wrong for our ham-handed chef! This time he managed to flip exactly half the pizza upside down. He tried to flip it back up, but the cheese is spread just as thickly as on the last pizza, and every time he tries to flip a slice, the adjacent slices turn over with it. Can you find a way to get the whole pizza back the right way up, toppings and all?" The objective bar says, "Flip the pizza face up!"

How the pizza works

The top screen shows the pizza from above, cut into eight slices, with a spatula under one slice. At the start, the four slices on the right are face down and the four on the left are face up. The touch screen shows a pizza wheel with a handle on its rim.

  • Pick a slice. Slide the stylus around the wheel on the touch screen. The spatula follows the handle from slice to slice.
  • Flip it. Lift the stylus, and the slice above the spatula flips over.
  • Neighbors flip too. The two slices on both sides of the one you pick turn over with it, so every flip turns three slices.
  • Start over. Restart puts the pizza back the way it started.

The steps on this page name slices by clock positions, as if the pizza were a clock face with 12 at the top. The face-down half runs from 12 round to 6, and the face-up half from 6 round to 12.

The starting pizza with clock labels 12, 1:30, 3, 4:30, 6, 7:30, 9 and 10:30 at the eight cuts; the four slices on the right, from 12 round to 6, are face down and the four slices on the left are face up

Wrong Puzzle 069?

  • Daily Puzzle 069 is Rabbit 07, from the Food Chain set.
  • The other pizza puzzles are different pizzas from the same gallery: Puzzle 046, Toppings Up!, in Chapter 3, and Puzzle 107, Toppings Up! 3, in Chapter 7. They start with different slices face down, so this page's flips won't work there.
  • Puzzle 69 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a half-flipped pizza, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Toppings Up! 2 opens at the start of Chapter 5, once your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!" Go to Montsarton Gallery in Monte d'Or and talk to Artie. Luke notices something first: "Professor...do you smell something?" Artie explains, "Oh! I'm sorry. You caught me just after my lunch. I was having a fantastic stilton-and-camembert pizza." Then he offers the puzzle: "Are you an artist? Or just a critic? Perhaps you'll develop an appreciation for my work after this puzzle."

If you quit, Artie says, "I suppose not everyone can properly appreciate a good slice." When you come back to try again, he says, "Fresh pizza bubbling with cheese makes quite an impression on the taste buds."

Montsarton Gallery has six hint coins. Three are in the normal view of the hall. They're at the hand of the statue on the left, on the stairs and at the light on the right. The other three are in the zoomed-in view of the left archway; tap the archway on the left of the hall to zoom in. There they're at the top of the pillar on the left, and behind and in front of the small painting. Each coin can be collected only once, so if you picked them up in Chapter 3, when you came here for Puzzles 045 and 046, they're already gone.

You can skip it; the story doesn't need it. Artie offers it until your objective becomes "Catch the Masked Gentleman!" If you leave it unsolved, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7, so you can still play it there.

When the pizza won't come out right

  • You flipped three face-down slices at once and got stuck. It looks like progress, but it leaves one face-down slice on its own, and that takes far more flips to fix than starting over. Tap Restart and read Hint 1 below.
  • You have most slices up and can't finish. Each flip from there turns some good slices back over. Restart and plan the flips from the starting pizza.
  • The spatula is on the wrong slice. The slice that flips is the one the spatula is under when you lift the stylus. Slide around the wheel until the handle points at the slice you want.
  • You can't find the puzzle. Talk to Artie in Montsarton Gallery any time from the start of Chapter 5 until your objective becomes "Catch the Masked Gentleman!"

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: Where to start

You may be tempted to go ahead and flip over three slices on the right side of the pizza, but don't be hasty.

That said, the first slice you need to flip is on the right.

Hint 2: The first flip

With your first move, you should flip two slices up and one down. There are two possible slices you can flip to achieve this, but don't worry--you can finish in the minimum number of moves either way.

Hint 3: The second flip

Remember the two possible slices mentioned in Hint 2? Your next move is to flip the second one, the one you didn't pick last time.

You should now have a similar pattern on the opposite side.

Super Hint: The last flips

Now it's time to flip a slice on the left side. Resist the urge to pick a facedown slice and flip one facing up. The puzzle is as good as solved!

Answer and full solution

The answer below covers every flip, with a picture of the pizza before each one and a picture of the solved puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: flip four slices once each: the slice from 12 to 1:30, the slice from 4:30 to 6, the slice from 7:30 to 9 and the slice from 9 to 10:30. The order doesn't matter, but the steps below follow the hints.

Step by step:

  1. 12 to 1:30. Put the spatula under the top slice on the right, from 12 to 1:30, and flip. That slice and the one from 1:30 to 3 come up, and the face-up slice from 10:30 to 12 goes down. Now the slices from 3 to 6 and from 10:30 to 12 are face down.
  2. 4:30 to 6. Flip the bottom slice on the right, from 4:30 to 6. The slices from 3 to 6 come up, and the slice from 6 to 7:30 goes down. The right half is now face up, and the slices from 6 to 7:30 and from 10:30 to 12 are face down: the same pattern on the opposite side.
  3. 7:30 to 9. Flip the face-up slice from 7:30 to 9. The slice from 6 to 7:30 comes up, and the slices from 7:30 to 10:30 go down. Now the three slices from 7:30 round to 12 are face down, side by side.
  4. 9 to 10:30. Flip the middle one of those three, from 9 to 10:30. All three come up, and the whole pizza is face up.
Five pictures of the pizza from above in two rows. Flip 1: 12 to 1:30, with the right half face down and the spatula under the slice from 12 to 1:30. Flip 2: 4:30 to 6, with the slices from 3 to 6 and from 10:30 to 12 face down and the spatula under the slice from 4:30 to 6. Flip 3: 7:30 to 9, with the slices from 6 to 7:30 and from 10:30 to 12 face down and the spatula under the slice from 7:30 to 9. Flip 4: 9 to 10:30, with the three slices from 7:30 to 12 face down and the spatula under the slice from 9 to 10:30. Solved: all face up, with every slice face up
Illustration of the pizza before each of the four flips, with the spatula under the slice to flip, and the solved pizza.

These are exactly the flips the four hints describe. Hint 2's two possible first slices are the ones at the two ends of the face-down half, from 12 to 1:30 and from 4:30 to 6, and Hint 3 has you flip the other one next. Flipping the same slice twice just undoes it, so each slice is flipped at most once, and this set of four is the only set of flips that turns the whole pizza face up. That's also why the order doesn't matter.

The game confirms it: "Correct!" It adds, "You can flip the whole pizza back up in just four moves, you know."

The solved puzzle: on the top screen, every slice of the pizza face up with tomato slices and the spatula under the slice from 9 to 10:30; on the touch screen, the objective bar Flip the pizza face up!, the pizza wheel with its handle pointing up and to the left, and the Hints, Quit, Memo and Restart buttons
Illustration of the whole pizza face up after four flips.

If it still doesn't finish:

  • A slice you fixed went back down. Every flip turns the two neighbors as well. Restart and flip only the four slices above, once each.
  • You flipped one of the four slices twice. The second flip cancels the first. Restart and follow the steps in order.
  • The wrong slice flipped. Check where the spatula is before you lift the stylus.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Toppings Up! 2 shows 35 picarats when it starts. Its three picarat values are all 35.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. Montsarton Gallery's six coins would cover all four hints, but only if you haven't collected them already; if you picked them up in Chapter 3, you need coins from elsewhere, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. You get the picarats and the puzzle in your collection, but no rabbit play, gadget or other bonus, and the story doesn't depend on it.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You move the spatula with the wheel on the touch screen, and the top screen shows the pizza.
  • US and UK English versions: same pizza, same answer. The UK name is Toppings Up! Part 2. The UK text differs only in small details of wording, such as "face-down" in the Super Hint.

The scene around the puzzle

Layton isn't sure about the lunch: "You eat your lunch here in the gallery? Is that not...frowned upon?" Artie answers, "Hardly. I create an artistic experience for the eyes as well as the nose."

When it's solved, Artie says, "This puzzle demonstrates a situation we all have experienced. Life truly does imitate art." Luke says, "Maybe it's for the best that the police confiscated the paintings in question." Layton adds, "I hope the artwork maintains its appeal in such an...aromatic atmosphere." Artie insists, "The museum is quiet right now because we just reopened. It has nothing to do with the cheese, if that is what you're implying." He even has plans: "In fact, I've been thinking about serving pizza to our patrons. Fine pizza and fine art would be quite an attraction."
